Love the earth as you would love yourself.

Happy Earth Day my friends!

I’m always feeling a little happier on this day. It makes me want to give back, be better, take care of everything around me, hug a tree, or plant a seed. Anyone else feel this way? Last night I made my seed bombs and this morning I tossed them on my walk.

In honor or Earth Day, I decided to share one of my favorite earth-inspired goodies. A Calendula-Lavender-Rose Herbal Salve, inspired by My Tiny Laguna Kitchen.

This salve is easy, divine, and one of my favorites – ok, I have a lot of favorites, but this is a good one and much better than store bought lotions. These earth-provided ingredients leave your skin feeling hydrated and soft. The way mother nature intended.

Let’s talk about the ingredients.

Calendula
Calendula is a marigold plant that has historically been used for ailments affecting the skin like healing wounds, soothing eczema and even diaper rash. It has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that make it perfect in this salve.

Lavender
Lavender, sweet, sweet lavender. It smells amazing and is simply gorgeous. It’s great in aromatherapy, helps with anxiety and sleeping, is great for skin and hair (perfect for this recipe) and has been used to treat a ton of different ailments.

Rose
As we know roses smell unbelievable. But did you also know they contain a ton of health benefits? Rose helps sooth skin irritation (ahem), reduces skin redness, treats infection, heals cuts, scars & burns, and can even relieve headaches.

Interested in learning how to make this salve? Let’s do this.

First you have to make the flower-infused oil. You can learn more on how to make an infused oil here. Keep in mind this takes time so think ahead. Place 1 cup total of combined calendula, lavender & rose flowers into a mason jar. I like to use a ½ cup of calendula, ¼ cup lavender, and ¼ cup of rose buds.

Then cover the flowers with oil; 1 cup sweet almond oil, 1 cup coconut oil (melted), and 1 cup olive oil. You can also use 3 cups of olive oil (but I like the mix of 3 separate oils). Now shake up the jar and let the beauty sit for 4-6 weeks. Store in a cool, dark place and be sure to shake the jar every few days to keep it all well combined.

Once you have your flower-infused oil ready, strain the flowers out so you have nothing but the glorious infused oil. This is your liquid gold.

Now let’s make the salve. Place 1 cup of your infused oil and the beeswax into a double boiler (or glass bowl over a boiling water) and heat on low to medium heat, until the beeswax has completely melted. Remove from heat and let set for a few minutes.

Add in the Vitamin E oil and if you want an extra rose smell, add drops of rose essential oil then give everything a good stir.

Finally pour the oil into your jars or tins and allow the salve to cool and harden completely before placing the lids on.

That’s it and you have an incredible salve that you can use on your hands, feet, or any dry skin that needs a little healing. A little goes a long way with this goodness.

Hope you try it. Peace & Love,
Nikki
