Resolutions for Better Days

January is that time when we set resolutions and think about new beginnings, a better life, a better self, and a better year. But in light of recent events, it seems a better anything is impossible, and the year ahead is uncertain. I’m doing my best to remain optimistic and positive but as we all know, this is not easy. I know a lot of you are struggling with me, so just know you’re not alone.  

Going into this new year I started thinking about New Year’s resolutions. I’ve always had a mixed opinion of New Year’s resolutions because it’s something people get excited for but end up not following through with. I typically don’t make them for that reason, but this year and in theses exasperating times, I decided I’m going to make a resolution – to continue driving positive actions and living my values. I believe these actions and values can impact change and make this crazy world a little better.
So here we go:

Kindness

Being kind is an act of doing good, and luckily, it’s a simple thing to do. If we all did one random act of kindness every day, we might just change the world! As Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Pass it on.

Sense of Humor

Laughter seems to improve any stressful situation and it is good ‘ol natural medicine. If you’re arguing with loved ones who have a different opinion, try changing the tune with a little silliness to get a chuckle. I believe that a sense of humor can keep our spirits high even when we feel low. This is something I love most about myself and try to carry into all my relationships.

Spirit of Adventure

To me, the spirit of adventure means trying new things. Stepping outside your comfort zone, and live life to the fullest. This quote says it all (I used to carry it in my pocket): “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Positivity

Positive thinking is hard but is undeniably critical these days. Over the years I’ve found a way to make this come naturally, it takes work, but look at all possible sides of a situation so the glass can be half full. Think about what can be learned and what you can do to turn a frown upside down.

Open-Mindedness

The last few years have brought a lot of various opinions. Some I’ll never understand but I will continue to be open to other’s opinions whether I share them or not. There’s enough hate in this world and I will continue to keep my mind open, my heart full, and will continue to voice my opinion in a loving way.

Respect

Respect for myself and respect for others no matter what our differing opinions are. Showing respect can change the course of a conflict and respecting yourself is your guide to a better life.
